Dilip Kumar, along with the likes of Raj Kapoor and Dev Anand, defined Bollywood cinema in the 1940s and 50s. He set the template for many of the next generations of actors to make their performances brilliant and extraordinary.
With a charismatic personality, naturalistic acting style, and dashing look, he debuted with Jwar Bhata in 1944. The big breakthrough came in the 1950s where he acted in super hit movies like Devdas, Mughal-e-Azam and Naya Daur, which anointed him as “The Tragedy King of Bollywood” for the tragic roles, he played in them.
But his versatility as an actor shines through with fascinating performances as a romantic in films like Kohinoor and Azaad, comedy in Ram Aur Shyam and a dacoit in Gunga Jamuna. Although his oeuvre consists of a long list of hit movies, the most loved ones may perhaps include Andaaz, Shakti, Kranti, Saudagar, Karma.
The teaming of Dilip Kumar and singer Mohammed Rafi also gave some of the most memorable songs of all time. It includes Udein Jab Jab Zulfein Teri, Yeh Desh Hai Veer Jawano Ka, Madhuban Mein Radhika Naache Re, Dil Mein Chhupa Ke Pyar Ka Toofan which are forever etched in the memories of his fans.
With the demise of the thespian actor Dilip Kumar, it is indeed an end of an era. But his enthralling acting performance and inspiring work will continue to be cherished forever.
RIP Dilip Sir
