The great Indian actor, dancer, film director, writer, producer, singer and lyricist Kamal Hasaan was born on 7th November 1954 in a Tamil Iyengar family. He was initially named as Parthasarthy but his father and freedom fighter D. Srinivasan changes his name to Kamal Haasan.

Kamal Haasan made his first appearance on-screen at the age of four in the film Kalathur Kannamma. For his exceptional performance as a child artist, young Kamal won the Rashtrapati Award. He continued to act as a child artist for more than five films. He also did a Malayalam film in the year 1962. Kamal Haasan then returned to films after a long break in 1970, but this time as a dance assistant under choreographer Thankappan. He worked with Thankappan for many films, and also made short appearances in many films. His first considerable role was for the movie Arangetram, a Tamil film by K.Balachander. He also played many supporting roles in films like Gumasthavin Magal (1974), Aval Oru Thodar Kathai (1974) and Naan Avanillai. He also played the lead role in a Malayalam movie, Kanyakumari and won his first Filmfare award.

Kamal Haasan has been known across the globe for his contributions to Tamil cinema. His first Tamil lead role was in Apoorva Raagangai. Kamal Haasan put life to this role and also learned mridangam in the process. He won a second Filmfare for his acting. From 1976-79, Kamal Haasan made lead appearances in many films like Manmadha Leelai, Oru Oodhappu Kan Simittugiradhu. Very particular about his roles, Haasan also learned ventriloquism for the movie Moondru Mudichu Avargal. This movie was again made in Telugu with Kamal Haasan. Supporting his friend and mentor Balu Mahendra, Kamal Haasan starred in his first Kannada film, Kokila. He also made his proper Telugu film debut with the movie Maro Charitra. His film Sigappu Rojakkal won him his fifth consecutive Filmfare.

During the end of 1970s, Kamal Haasan had added six Filmfare awards to his name. The 80s was when Kamal Haasan really grew as an actor and performer and gained fame across India and also overseas. He appeared in films like Varumayin Niram Sivappu, Ullasa Paravaigal, Guru and Maria, My Darling. Kamal Haasan is one of the very few actors that won a Filmfare award for his debut Bollywood performance in Ek Duuje Ke Liye. Raja Paarvai was his 100th film appearance, and he also debuted as a producer. He worked on many Tamil movie remakes like Ye Toh Kamaal Ho Gaya and Zara Si Zindagi.

Haasan’s appearance in Saagar won him the Filmfare Best Actor Award and this film also represented India at the Oscars. Kamal Haasan won his career’s second national award for Nayakan directed by the legendary Mani Ratnam.
